Global Liveability Index 2026

 Copenhagen (Denmark) has been ranked the world’s most liveable city for the second consecutive year in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2026.

  • Vienna (Austria) and Melbourne (Australia) retained the second and third positions, respectively.
  • Zurich and Geneva each slipped by one position due to a decline in their culture and environment scores.
  • Among Indian cities:
    • New Delhi ranked 120th.
    • Mumbai ranked 121st.
    • Chennai ranked 123rd.
    • Bengaluru ranked 127th.
  • Damascus (Syria) remained the world’s least liveable city for the second consecutive year.
  • Caracas (Venezuela) was the only city to move out of the bottom ten, following political changes after the formation of a new government in January 2026.

About the Global Liveability Index

  • The Global Liveability Index is published annually by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research and analysis division of The Economist Group.
  • The 2026 Index assessed 173 cities across the world.
  • Cities are evaluated using 30 indicators grouped into five categories: Stability, Healthcare, Culture and Environment, Education & Infrastructure.
