Copenhagen (Denmark) has been ranked the world’s most liveable city for the second consecutive year in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2026.
- Vienna (Austria) and Melbourne (Australia) retained the second and third positions, respectively.
- Zurich and Geneva each slipped by one position due to a decline in their culture and environment scores.
- Among Indian cities:
- New Delhi ranked 120th.
- Mumbai ranked 121st.
- Chennai ranked 123rd.
- Bengaluru ranked 127th.
- Damascus (Syria) remained the world’s least liveable city for the second consecutive year.
- Caracas (Venezuela) was the only city to move out of the bottom ten, following political changes after the formation of a new government in January 2026.
About the Global Liveability Index
- The Global Liveability Index is published annually by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research and analysis division of The Economist Group.
- The 2026 Index assessed 173 cities across the world.
- Cities are evaluated using 30 indicators grouped into five categories: Stability, Healthcare, Culture and Environment, Education & Infrastructure.
