Government notifies Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026

The Central Government has notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, introducing a streamlined, transparent, and time-bound framework for the development of pipeline infrastructure across the country.

Issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and published in the Extraordinary Gazette of India, the order has come into immediate effect.

Key Features of the Order

  • Uniform Regulatory Framework:
Establishes standardised procedures for laying, building, operating, and expanding pipelines, reducing ambiguity and discretionary decision-making.
  • Time-bound Approvals:
Introduces strict timelines along with deemed clearance provisions, ensuring faster approvals and minimizing bureaucratic delays.
  • Ease of Land Access:
Addresses long-standing challenges related to land acquisition and permissions, facilitating smoother pipeline expansion—even in residential areas.
  • Transparency and Efficiency:
Standardisation of charges and processes aims to improve accountability and investor confidence in the sector.

Significance

The new policy is expected to accelerate the expansion of natural gas infrastructure in India, a key component of the government’s strategy to increase the share of gas in the energy mix. By removing regulatory bottlenecks and ensuring faster clearances, the order aims to support industrial growth, urban gas distribution, and cleaner energy adoption.
