Hutatma Smruti Smarak

Why in News?
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the newly redeveloped Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi, Goa, on 26 August 2026, commemorating the sacrifices made during Goa’s liberation struggle against Portuguese rule.

Key Points:

• Patradevi is a historic site associated with the Goa liberation movement.
• On 15 August 1955, thousands of volunteers from across India participated in a peaceful satyagraha against Portuguese rule.
• The first group of satyagrahis entered Goa through Patradevi carrying Indian national flags.
• Portuguese forces opened machine-gun fire on the peaceful protesters, resulting in the deaths of several satyagrahis.
• The memorial was redeveloped by the Government of Goa through the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation at a cost of approximately ₹9.50 crore.
• Goa was liberated from Portuguese rule through Operation Vijay in 1961, conducted by the Indian Armed Forces.
• The memorial commemorates the courage, sacrifice and patriotism of those who participated in the struggle for Goa’s liberation.
