ILO Adopts Convention No. 193 on Decent Work in the Platform Economy

Why in News?

The International Labour Organization (ILO) adopted Convention No. 193 on Decent Work in the Platform Economy during the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva on June 12, 2026. It is the first global treaty establishing binding labour standards for gig and platform workers worldwide. 

About ILO Convention No. 193

  • It is the first international convention specifically focused on workers in the platform (gig) economy.
  • Adopted by a vote of 406 in favour, 8 against, and 36 abstentions.
  • Seeks to address long-standing gaps in labour protection for workers whose jobs are managed through digital platforms.

What is Platform (Gig) Work?

  • Platform or gig work refers to income-generating activities arranged through digital platforms or apps.
  • According to the World Bank, around 435 million people globally earn income through labour platforms.

Gig Workers in India

  • India’s Code on Social Security, 2020 formally recognizes gig workers and platform workers and extends social security protection to them.
  • A gig worker is a person who performs work or participates in a work arrangement; and earns from such activities outside the traditional employer-employee relationship.
  • Aggregators are required to contribute 1–2% of their annual turnover to a Social Security Fund.
  • The contribution is capped at 5% of the payments made or payable to gig and platform workers.
  • Eligible workers may receive: accident insurance, health benefits, maternity benefits, disability and life cover and other social security benefits notified by the government.
