India achieves highest-ever annual wind energy addition of 6.05 GW in 2025–26

India has achieved its highest-ever annual wind energy capacity addition of 6.05 GW in FY 2025–26, surpassing the previous record set in FY 2016–17. This marks a 46% increase over FY 2024–25, signaling a strong acceleration in the country’s renewable energy push.

With this milestone, India’s total installed wind power capacity has crossed 56 GW, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s leading wind energy markets. The growth reflects renewed momentum driven by improved policy clarity, better transmission infrastructure, competitive tariff discovery, and a robust project pipeline.

States such as Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra have emerged as key contributors, supported by the expansion of wind-solar hybrid projects and the rollout of green energy open access.

The government has introduced several measures to boost the sector, including:

  • Concessional customs duty on wind turbine components
  • Waiver of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges until June 2028
  • Competitive bidding mechanisms
  • Dedicated Wind Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) framework
  • Technical support from the National Institute of Wind Energy

This record capacity addition significantly strengthens India’s renewable energy portfolio and aligns with its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030.
