ISRO Launches ‘Mission MITRA’ in Ladakh

The Indian Space Research Organisation has initiated Mission MITRA (Mapping of Interoperable Traits and Response Assessment) in Leh from April 2 to 9, 2026, marking a major step toward strengthening India’s human spaceflight capabilities.

Conducted at an altitude of around 3,500 metres, Leh offers extreme environmental conditions such as low oxygen (hypoxia), cold temperatures, and isolation, making it a natural analog for spaceflight scenarios.

Mission MITRA is a first-of-its-kind team behavioral study, jointly designed by ISRO and the Institute of Aerospace Medicine. The mission aims to assess the physiological, psychological, and operational performance of both crew members and ground teams operating under such challenging conditions.

The study focuses on understanding:

  • Team interoperability between astronauts (Gaganyatris) and ground control
  • Decision-making efficiency under environmental and operational stress
  • Human factors affecting performance in extreme environments

The findings from this mission are expected to provide crucial insights for India’s human spaceflight programme, particularly the Gaganyaan programme, and will also support planning for future long-duration space missions.
