India launches SHANTI campaign for UN Security Council seat for 2028-29 term

India has officially launched its campaign for election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–29 term.

  • The campaign was launched by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • During the launch, India unveiled its SHANTI vision—Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity—as its guiding approach to promoting global peace, security, and equitable development.
  • Dr. Jaishankar stated that the growing conflicts and global instability make the role of the United Nations more important than ever.
  • Highlighting India’s contributions, he noted that India has deployed nearly 3 lakh personnel to around 50 UN peacekeeping missions since the UN’s establishment.
  • India currently has over 4,300 personnel serving in 10 UN peacekeeping missions.
  • He also reiterated India’s commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and representing the interests of the Global South.
  • If elected, India will serve a two-year term from 2028 to 2029.
  • India has previously served as a non-permanent member of the UNSC eight times, most recently during 2021–22.

About the UN Security Council (UNSC)

  • The UN Security Council is the principal UN organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
  • It consists of 15 members:
    • 5 Permanent Members (P5): China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, each having veto power.
    • 10 Non-Permanent Members, elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms, with five members elected every year.
