India Ranks third globally in Renewable Energy Installed Capacity-IRENA

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced that India has become the third-largest country globally in renewable energy installed capacity, after China and United States, as per the Renewable Energy Statistics 2026 released by the International Renewable Energy Agency.

India has overtaken Brazil in the global rankings and added 55.3 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity during FY 2025–26.

The Minister highlighted that in July 2025, renewable energy contributed a record 51.5% share in electricity generation, meeting demand of 203 GW.

As of March 31, 2026, India’s total installed non-fossil fuel capacity stands at 283.46 GW, while total power generation during 2025–26 reached 1,845.921 billion units (BU).

The share of non-fossil fuels in total electricity generation rose to 29.2% (538.97 BU) during the year.

India also achieved a major milestone in June 2025 by reaching 50% of its cumulative installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of its 2030 target under its Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement.

Out of the total non-fossil capacity, 274.68 GW comes from renewable energy, including:

  • 150.26 GW Solar
  • 56.09 GW Wind
  • 11.75 GW Bio Energy
  • 5.17 GW Small Hydro
  • 51.41 GW Large Hydro

Additionally, 8.78 GW capacity comes from nuclear power, further strengthening India’s clean energy transition.
