Why in News?
Kohima-based filmmaker Theja Rio’s debut feature film Angh has won the Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The award gives the film a direct pathway to compete for the 2027 Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category, under a new qualification rule.
About Angh
Set in 1960s Nagaland, Angh follows an ageing Konyak village chief and his son, who are among the last members of their community preserving their ancestral faith and traditional way of life amid rapid social and cultural change.
The film explores themes of cultural identity, tradition, generational change and the preservation of indigenous heritage. Its recognition at TIFF also brings greater international attention to Naga culture and Northeast Indian cinema.
