Indian Navy Receives Third Indigenous ASW Shallow Water Craft ‘Mangrol’

Why in News?

The Indian Navy on 21 August 2026 received Mangrol, the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) at Kochi.

Key Points

Mangrol has more than 80% indigenous content, reflecting India’s growing capability in indigenous warship design and construction.

The vessel is primarily designed for underwater surveillance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations in coastal waters.

It can also undertake Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and mine warfare, making it suitable for a range of maritime security missions.

The vessel is waterjet-propelled and equipped with advanced torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, radars and sonar systems.

Name and Heritage

The ship has been named after Mangrol, a coastal town and minor port in Junagadh district of Gujarat, known for its importance to the marine fishing industry.

The name also carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Mangrol, an Indian Navy minesweeper that remained in service until 2004.
