India’s first electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft prototype

Recently, ePlane Company, an IIT Madras-incubated startup, launched India’s first electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft prototype.

The company plans to launch commercial eVTOL services by 2028, initially focusing on air ambulance services.

The company intends to subsequently expand its eVTOL operations to passenger transportation.

The development comes amid a global race among companies in the US, Europe and China to commercialise eVTOL aircraft.

About eVTOL aircraft 

eVTOL aircraft are designed to reduce travel time in cities by enabling passengers to travel above congested road traffic.

eVTOL stands for Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft.

An eVTOL is a battery-powered aircraft that can take off and land vertically like a helicopter and then transition to forward flight like a conventional aeroplane.

Unlike conventional aircraft, eVTOLs do not require long runways, allowing them to operate from relatively small spaces.

Most eVTOL designs use multiple electrically powered propellers instead of a single large rotor for generating lift and thrust.

eVTOL technology combines electric propulsion, advanced materials and autonomous technologies to support Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).

The technology aims to combine the vertical take-off and landing capability of helicopters with the cruising efficiency of fixed-wing aircraft.

Helicopters generally rely on one or two large rotors powered by aviation fuel.

In contrast, eVTOL aircraft use multiple electric motors and propellers powered by batteries.

Many eVTOL developers use Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP), in which several propellers work together to generate lift and thrust.

The development of eVTOL aircraft could potentially transform urban mobility by enabling faster, cleaner and more efficient air transportation within and between cities.
