Kawal Tiger Reserve Identified as Priority Site for Tiger Recovery

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has identified Kawal Tiger Reserve in Telangana as a ‘priority recipient site’ for tiger recovery.

The reserve has been placed among the potential sites for tiger reintroduction or population augmentation, subject to scientific assessment and systematic planning.

The recommendation is part of the ‘Roadmap for Active Management of Tigers in India’, released jointly by the NTCA and the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in June 2026.

According to the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE), Kawal currently has no resident tiger population.

The reserve has been placed in Stage 1 – Habitat and Prey Recovery of the ecological recovery continuum.

The report notes that Kawal historically supported tiger populations and continues to receive dispersing tigers from neighbouring source populations, but currently lacks a resident tiger population.

The report categorises Kawal’s tiger population as absent, while its prey base and habitat quality are described as depressed.

Low prey abundance and fragmented habitat connectivity have been identified as the principal constraints to the recovery of a viable tiger population in the reserve.

Kawal Tiger Reserve comprises tropical dry deciduous forests, teak-dominated woodlands, bamboo patches and riverine habitats, providing important ecological diversity.

The reserve occupies a strategic location between tiger populations of Central India and the Eastern Ghats, making it significant for landscape-level tiger conservation.

Kawal is also linked to the Tadoba–Andhari landscape through fragmented forest corridors across Maharashtra and Telangana.

The identification of Kawal as a priority recipient site highlights the need to first strengthen its habitat quality, prey base and landscape connectivity before undertaking large-scale tiger reintroduction or population augmentation.
