India’s first satellite-tagged Ganges soft-shell turtle released in Kaziranga

India’s first satellite-tagged Ganges softshell turtle, an endangered freshwater turtle species, was released in the 1,302 sq. km Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam on May 15, 2026.

The release coincided with Endangered Species Day (observed on the third Friday of May) and marks an important milestone in India’s wildlife conservation and scientific tracking initiatives.

The initiative reflects Assam’s broader biodiversity conservation efforts, which recently included the inauguration of the Kaziranga Orchid Park at Kohora.

About the Ganges Softshell Turtle

The Ganges softshell turtle (Nilssonia gangetica) is a large freshwater turtle species inhabiting major rivers, lakes and reservoirs across India. This is a species of softshell turtle found in South Asia in rivers such as the Ganges, Indus and Mahanadi.

Conservation Status

  • IUCN Red List: Endangered
  • Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972: Protected under Schedule I

Identification: The species can be identified by the distinct arrowhead-shaped markings present on the top of its head.

Ecological Importance

  • Long-lived and large-growing freshwater species
  • Acts as a major predator in river ecosystems
  • Helps maintain ecological balance by feeding on dead and decaying animal matter, thereby cleaning aquatic systems

Assam: A Global Freshwater Turtle Conservation Hotspot

Assam is recognised as one of the world’s top-priority regions for freshwater turtle conservation because of its exceptional turtle diversity.

  • Assam is home to 21 species of turtles
  • It is among the richest turtle habitats in Asia
  • Of the eight softshell turtle species found in India, five occur in Kaziranga National Park alone

The satellite-tagging initiative is expected to help scientists better understand the movement patterns, habitat use and conservation needs of the endangered species, strengthening long-term protection strategies for freshwater turtles in India.
