Integrated Fertilizer Management System (iFMS)

Why in News?

The Integrated Fertilizer Management System (iFMS) has entered a new phase with several digital initiatives aimed at making India’s fertilizer supply chain more transparent, efficient and data-driven.

About iFMS

  • iFMS is the digital backbone of India’s fertilizer management system, developed and technically supported by NIC for the Department of Fertilizers.
  • It connects the entire fertilizer chain, including:
    • Production and imports
    • Movement and stock availability
    • Retail sale
    • Subsidy processing
  • Scale of iFMS:
    • Over 14 crore Aadhaar-linked fertilizer buyers
    • More than 2.5 lakh retailers
    • Around 7 crore metric tonnes of fertilizer sales annually
    • Supports nearly ₹2 lakh crore in annual fertilizer subsidy administration.
  • The system is being transformed from a transaction-recording platform into an integrated monitoring and decision-support system.
  • iFMS is being integrated with farmer, land and crop databases maintained by States and other government platforms.
  • This integration can help improve fertilizer availability, targeted monitoring, subsidy management and evidence-based policymaking.
  • It can also help identify imbalances in fertilizer demand and supply and improve the efficiency of the fertilizer subsidy system.
