Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026

Why in News?

The Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 on 27 August 2026 as part of the government’s “One Nation, One Time” initiative.

Key Points

• The Rules establish Indian Standard Time (IST) as the common time reference for legal, administrative, commercial and official purposes across India.
• They will come into force 180 days after publication in the Official Gazette, allowing organisations to upgrade their systems.
• The government is developing infrastructure to disseminate accurate and secure IST nationwide through Indian institutions and Legal Metrology laboratories.
• NavIC, India’s indigenous satellite navigation system, along with other approved Indian timing sources, can be used for reliable time dissemination.
• A White Rabbit Technology-based IST Dissemination Demonstration Network was commissioned at RRSL, Bengaluru, in July 2026.
• The network has demonstrated IST dissemination for critical sectors such as Banking, Telecommunications, Power, Transportation, Digital governance.
• Secure IST dissemination was also demonstrated between RRSL Bengaluru and NSE Chennai, with participation from CSIR-NPL, ISRO, SEBI, NSE and BSNL, among others.
