About Jadopatia Painting

Jadopatia Painting is a traditional scroll painting practised by the Jadu community in Jharkhand. The name is derived from ‘Jadu’, the community of painters, and ‘Pat’, meaning scroll.

The artists are primarily based in Nawasar village of Dumka district. They prepare their paintings using natural colours obtained from plants and minerals.

The paintings depict themes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, local festivals, rituals and folklore. However, the most distinctive theme is the Santhal belief regarding life after death.

According to this tradition, when a member of the Santhal community passes away, Jadopatia artists visit the bereaved family with a painting depicting the departed soul without pupils in its eyes, symbolising that the soul has not yet attained peace. After receiving an offering from the family, the artist paints the pupils, signifying the liberation of the departed soul from grief.
