Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh recently dedicated the UMMID Programme (Unique Methods of Management of Inherited Disorders) Programme for Rare Genetic Disorders to the nation. 

What is the UMMID Programme?

UMMID stands for: Unique Methods of Management of Inherited Disorders. It is a national programme aimed at:

  • Early detection of inherited genetic disorders,
  • Genetic screening and diagnosis,
  • Counselling and management support for affected families.

The programme seeks to strengthen genomic and precision medicine in India. 

  • The programme focuses on rare and inherited genetic disorders that often remain undiagnosed or untreated.
  • It supports:
    • Early screening,
    • Genetic counselling,
    • Diagnostic services.
  • Nearly 30 NIDAN Kendras have been established under the programme to provide advanced diagnostic and counselling services across the country.
  • The programme has benefited nearly three lakh individuals through screening and diagnosis.
  • Special outreach has been expanded to Aspirational Districts and underserved regions.

What are NIDAN Kendras?

NIDAN Kendras are specialised centres established for:

  • Genetic testing,
  • Advanced diagnostics,
  • Counselling services related to inherited disorders.

These centres aim to improve access to genomic healthcare beyond metropolitan cities. 

Importance of Precision Medicine

The programme is expected to support the future development of precision medicine, where treatments are tailored according to an individual’s genetic profile.

This approach may improve treatment for diseases such as:

  • Diabetes,
  • Cardiac disorders,
  • Cancer.
