Why in News?
Union Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched the commercial use of bio-based biodegradable plastic based on Polylactic Acid (PLA), marking a step towards sustainable manufacturing in India. The initiative is being developed under the government’s BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) framework by Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML). A pilot-scale facility will be established at BCML’s integrated manufacturing complex at Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh, with a focus on developing specialised PLA grades and advanced PLA co-polymers for high-value applications.
About Polylactic Acid (PLA)
Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polymer derived from renewable organic resources such as corn starch and sugarcane. Unlike most conventional plastics, which are produced from fossil fuels through petroleum-based processes, PLA uses biomass-derived raw materials.
PLA can be used to develop biodegradable plastic products and has applications in areas such as packaging, consumer products and other specialised uses. Its production from renewable resources makes it an important material in the transition towards more sustainable and bio-based manufacturing.
