Keralam launches India’s first ecosystem Red List assessment

Why in News?

Kerala Environment Minister Sunny Joseph recently launched the Comprehensive Red List Assessment of Ecosystems in Keralam, described as India’s first ecosystem Red List assessment. Funded by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB), the two-year project is being implemented by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in collaboration with MES Asmabi College. It will assess the risk of ecosystem collapse across all 14 districts of Kerala.

About the Project

The project will use the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) framework to evaluate ecosystem health, vulnerability and the risk of collapse.

The assessment will cover diverse ecosystems, including:

  • Shola-grassland mosaics: High-altitude ecosystems of the Western Ghats.
  • Coastal mangroves: Important habitats that support biodiversity and protect coastlines.
  • Freshwater river networks: Ecosystems essential for aquatic biodiversity and water security.

The project has been included in the Kerala government’s 100 Days programme.
