Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away at 92

India’s one of its greatest musical icons, Asha Bhosle, passed away at the age of 92 on April 12, 2026, in Mumbai. She was cremated with full state honours at the Shivaji Park Crematorium. 

A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Asha Bhosle leaves behind an unparalleled musical legacy spanning over eight decades. 

A Life Dedicated to Music

Born in 1933 into the illustrious Mangeshkar family, Asha Bhosle began her musical journey at the age of 10. She made her debut with “Chala Chala Nav Bala” in the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943), and later entered Hindi cinema with “Saawan Aaya” in Chunariya (1948).

Over the years, she established herself as one of the most versatile playback singers, recording over 12,500 songs in more than 20 languages, including Hindi, Marathi, and Bangla. 

Iconic Achievements

  • National recognition for her ghazals in Umrao Jaan, including “Dil Cheez Kya Hai”
  • Another National Award for “Mera Kuchh Saamaan” from Ijaazat
  • Honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000)
  • Awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour

A Versatile Artist

Known for her extraordinary range, Asha Bhosle excelled across genres—from classical and ghazals to pop and cabaret songs. At the age of 79, she even ventured into acting with the film Mai (2013), portraying a mother battling Alzheimer’s disease. 

Personal Life

She was the younger sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. Asha Bhosle was married first to Ganpatrao Bhosle and later to renowned music composer Rahul Dev Burman.
