Limnonectes Motijheel

Scientists in India have identified a rare frog species named ‘Limnonectes Motijheel’ with unusual nesting behaviour inside the Namdapha Tiger Reserve, a biodiversity-rich forest landscape.

The amphibian, named after Motijheel lake, highlights the rich biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh and underscores the ecological importance of the region’s wetlands.

The species was documented by the Wildlife Institute of India and is described as a mud-nesting frog with distinctive physical characteristics.

Researchers found that the frog builds underground, cup-shaped nests beneath moist soil layers, hidden under thick leaf litter in evergreen forests.

One of its most striking features is a fanged jaw, which is rarely seen among similar amphibians and may help in feeding or territorial behaviour.

This discovery adds to the growing evidence of India’s rich but still largely unexplored amphibian diversity.
