Maiden salvo launch of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile Short Range (NASM-SR)

Why in the News?
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully conducted the maiden salvo launch of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile Short Range from a naval helicopter off the coast of the Bay of Bengal.

About NASM-SR
The NASM-SR is an indigenously developed, air-launched anti-ship missile designed for short-range maritime strike operations. It enhances the Indian Navy’s capability to target enemy ships with precision from airborne platforms.

Key Features

  • First-ever salvo launch (two missiles fired in quick succession) from the same helicopter platform.
  • Equipped with a solid propulsion booster and long-burn sustainer for effective range and speed.
  • Advanced seeker and integrated avionics module for precision targeting.
  • Uses fibre-optic gyroscope-based Inertial Navigation System (INS) and radio-altimeter for accurate navigation.
  • High-bandwidth two-way data link enables real-time communication and course correction.
  • Jet-vane control system for enhanced maneuverability.

Development and Testing
The missile has been developed by Research Centre Imarat in collaboration with other DRDO labs and Indian industries. The test was monitored using radar, electro-optical systems, and telemetry by the Integrated Test Range Chandipur.
