Vikram VT 21: DRDO’s new infantry combat vehicles

Why in the News?
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has launched the Vikram VT 21, introducing next-generation wheeled and tracked armoured combat vehicles.

About Vikram VT 21
Vikram VT 21 is an Advanced Armoured Platform (AAP) designed to enhance battlefield mobility, protection, and firepower. It integrates modern armour, surveillance systems, and weaponry to operate effectively across diverse terrains and combat scenarios.

Variants of the Platform

  • Wheeled Variant: Runs on tyres, offering higher speed, easier maintenance, and suitability for urban and semi-urban environments.
  • Tracked Variant: Uses continuous tracks (like tanks), providing superior stability and performance on rough, uneven, and off-road terrain.

Key Features

  • Equipped with an indigenously developed 30 mm crewless turret (remotely operated weapon system), improving crew safety and operational efficiency.
  • Advanced mobility and integrated surveillance systems.
  • Modular blast and ballistic protection.
  • Protection levels compliant with STANAG Protection Levels 4 and 5, ensuring resistance against heavy gunfire, explosions, and artillery fragments.

Development and Collaboration
The project has been developed by Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) in collaboration with Bharat Forge Limited and Tata Advanced Systems Limited, along with support from MSMEs and other DRDO labs.

Significance
The project strengthens India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities and aligns with the goal of self-reliance in defence. It enhances the operational readiness of armed forces with versatile platforms suitable for varied combat environments.
