Market Intervention Scheme (MIS)

The Government of India has approved key procurement measures across states to support farmers and stabilise prices, covering potatoes in Uttar Pradesh, chana in Andhra Pradesh, and tur (arhar) in Karnataka.

Key Decisions

  • Uttar Pradesh: Approval granted for potato procurement under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for the 2025–26 agricultural year.
  • Andhra Pradesh: Approved procurement of 94,500 metric tonnes of chana (Bengal gram) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
  • Karnataka: 30-day extension granted for procurement of tur (pigeon pea/arhar) at Minimum Support Price (MSP) under PSS for the Kharif 2025–26 season.

About Market Intervention Scheme (MIS)

  • A component of PM-AASHA.
  • Designed for perishable agricultural and horticultural commodities such as potatoes, onions, and tomatoes.
  • Implemented on request of States/UTs.
  • Triggered when prices fall by at least 10% compared to the previous normal season.
  • Objective: Prevent distress sale by farmers when MSP is not applicable.

About Price Support Scheme (PSS)

  • Ensures procurement of pulses, oilseeds, and copra at MSP.
  • Helps maintain price stability and farmer income security.

Significance

  • Farmer Protection: Shields farmers from price crashes in perishable and pulse crops.
  • Price Stabilisation: Maintains balance in agricultural markets.
  • Regional Focus: Tailored interventions based on crop-specific and state-specific needs.
