MoD inks pact with BEL for IAF mountain radars system

The Ministry of Defence on Monday signed a ₹1,950 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of two advanced mountain radars for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The deal has been inked under the ‘Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category, reinforcing the government’s push for domestic defence production.

The mountain radar systems have been designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) through its Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), and will be manufactured by BEL. The contract also includes associated equipment and infrastructure.

Key Highlights:

  • Enhances IAF’s air defence capability in mountainous terrain
  • Reduces dependence on foreign-origin defence systems
  • Boosts indigenous defence ecosystem under Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Officials stated that the induction of these radars will significantly strengthen surveillance and threat detection capabilities along sensitive high-altitude regions.
