National Single Window System (NSWS)

Why in News?

The National Single Window System (NSWS) completed five years since its launch on 22 September 2021. The digital platform is implemented by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to simplify the process of obtaining regulatory approvals required for businesses.

About NSWS

The National Single Window System is a digital platform that integrates business-related approvals offered by Central Ministries, State Governments and regulatory authorities on a common platform. It enables investors to submit information and documents through a single system, reducing duplication and helping shorten approval and compliance timelines.

A key feature of NSWS is the Know Your Approvals (KYA) module, which helps investors identify the approvals applicable to a business based on its proposed activities. The guidance provided through KYA is advisory in nature and does not constitute legal advice.

The platform currently hosts applications for approvals from 32 Central Ministries/Departments and 34 States and Union Territories. It also enables online application submission, payment of statutory fees, real-time application tracking and online communication with regulatory authorities.

NSWS uses Permanent Account Number (PAN) as the Single Business ID. Authorised representatives can be authenticated through Digital Signature Certificates (DSC), while DigiLocker is used for authentication in the case of sole proprietors.

The system is intended to improve coordination among government agencies, enhance transparency and predictability in regulatory processes, facilitate investment and support the vision of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance.”
