- President Ram Nath Kovind on June 16, 2019 sworn in seven-term member of Parliament Virendra Kumar as the pro-tem speaker of 17th Lok Sabha.
- Kumar will oversee the oath-taking of newly elected Lok Sabha members on June 16 and 17. On June 18, as soon as a new speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha is elected, his role will cease to exist.
- Virendra Kumar won the Lok Sabha election from Tikamgarh in Madhya Pradesh on a BJP ticket. He was a Minister of State in the previous Modi government.
About the Pro-tem Speaker
- Since the Speaker of the last Lok Sabha vacates his office immediately before the first siting of the newly- elected Lok Sabha, the President appoints a member of the Lok Sabha as the Speaker Pro Tem .
- A pro-tem speaker is chosen with the agreement of the members of the Lok Sabha. Usually, the seniormost member is selected for this. The President himself administers oath to the Speaker Pro Tem.
- Shri G.V. Mawalankar was the first pro-tem speaker of Lok Sabha.
- Kamalnath (Congress) was the pro-tem speaker of 16th Lok Sabha.

- On the constitution of 14th Lok Sabha, Shri Somnath Chaterjee was appointed by the President as Speaker Protem to perform the duties of the office of Speaker from the commencement of sitting of 14th Lok Sabha on 2 June, 2004 until the commencement of sitting on 4 June, 2004. As Shri Somnath Chaterjee became a condidate for the post of Speaker, Lok Sabha, the President, by his another order, appointed Shri Balasaheb Vikhe Patil as Speaker Pro Tem to perform the duties of the office of the Speaker from the commencement of the sitting of Lok Sabha on 4 June, 2004 till the election of Speaker.
