New Species of Leopard’s Bane Discovered in Arunachal Pradesh

Why in News?
Researchers from the CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, have discovered a new species of the sunflower family in Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh.

Key Points:

• The new species has been named Doronicum sanctum.
• It belongs to the genus Doronicum, commonly known as Leopard’s Bane.
• It was discovered at an altitude of around 4,000 metres above sea level.
• The species was identified during a botanical survey of Himalayan biodiversity hotspots in the region.
• It is the first species of the genus Doronicum documented from Northeast India.
• Earlier records of this genus in India were restricted to the Western Himalayas.
• The discovery highlights the rich and relatively underexplored plant diversity of the Eastern Himalayas, particularly Arunachal Pradesh.
