Oldest human jaw fossil outside Africa discovered in Israel

A human jawbone fossil has been discovered in Misliya cave in Israel which is believed to be 1,74,000 to 1,94,000 years old. It is believed to be the oldest modern human fossil discovered outside Africa, which is considered to be the evolutionary place of Modern Human. It is said that this fossil jawbone can change the early human migration pattern. According to the researchers associated with the discovery, ‘although this ancient person may have shared some anatomical characteristics with present-day people, this modern human would have probably looked much different from anyone living in the world today.’

  1. The fossil found at Misliya (Mount Carmel) is a left part of upper jaw of human.
  2. This jawbone have 7 intact teeth and one broken incisor.
  3. Perhaps it is young adult’s jawbone.
  4. If its date is confirmed scientifically, then modern human Homo sapiens earliest migration from Africa will be pushed back by 50,000 years. It is considered that the modern human started their first journey outside about 60,000 years ago. However this theory was challenged when about 1,00,000 years old 47 human teeth were discovered in China in 2015 which suggested that first migration of modern human from Africa took place much earlier.
  5. The oldest Homo sapiens fossils, discovered in Jebel Irhoud, Morocco, are around 300,000 years old.
