About Global Cities Index

The Global Cities Index evaluates cities using functional urban areas rather than relying solely on municipal administrative boundaries. It assesses cities across five broad dimensions: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance.

The index gives the highest weight to Economics (30%), while Human Capital and Quality of Life each account for 25%. Environment and Governance carry 10% each.

The indicators considered include income per person, income inequality, housing costs, life expectancy, crime, recreational and cultural amenities, air quality, emissions and exposure to climate-related risks. Governance is assessed at the national level, reflecting the broader institutional environment in which cities operate.
