Pacific island nation Nauru officially changes name to ‘Republic of Naoero’

Why in News?
The Pacific island nation of Nauru has officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero, restoring its traditional indigenous name as part of an effort to strengthen national identity and cultural heritage.

About the Republic of Naoero

• Naoero is the new official name of the country, while its citizens will be known as dei-Naoero.
• The name Naoero was historically changed to Nauru by European colonisers, who found the indigenous name difficult to pronounce.
• It is an island republic located in the Pacific Ocean, in southeastern Micronesia.
• It lies about 42 km south of the Equator and around 4,000 km northeast of Sydney, Australia.
• The country has a total land area of 21 sq km, making it the world’s third-smallest sovereign state, after Vatican City and Monaco.
• It has a population of around 12,000 people.
• Naoero does not have political parties; effectively all Members of Parliament (MPs) contest elections as independents.
• MPs are elected every three years by dei-Naoero citizens aged 20 years and above.
