Parliament Passes Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026

Why in News?

Parliament has passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, increasing the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

Key Highlights

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Bill on 3 August 2026.
  • The Rajya Sabha approved and returned the Bill on 4 August 2026, completing the legislative process.
  • The amendment revises the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956.
  • The increase in judicial strength had earlier been brought into effect through an Ordinance promulgated by President Droupadi Murmu in May 2026.
