Plan Bee system

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) saved 255 elephants from potential train collisions between January and September 2026.

The elephants were saved across four divisions: Alipurduar (106), Rangiya (14), Lumding (122), and Tinsukia (15).

NFR uses an AI-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) based on Distributed Acoustic System (DAS) technology to detect elephant movement near railway tracks.

Other measures include speed restrictions, enhanced patrolling, warning signs, vegetation clearance and crew sensitisation.

The ‘Plan Bee’ system uses amplified honeybee sounds to deter elephants from approaching railway tracks.

Underpasses are being constructed at identified locations to provide safer routes for elephants and reduce railway-track crossings.

NFR also coordinates in real time with the Forest Department whenever elephant movement is detected.

Across Indian Railways, such measures have helped reduce elephant deaths on tracks from 26 in 2013 to 12 in 2024, a reduction of more than 50%.
