PM Modi gifts Gulmarg, Konark and Yeoor cheeses to Swiss President Guy Parmelin

Why in News?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted three special Indian cheeses—Gulmarg, Konark and Yeoor—along with a hand-carved Kashmiri walnut wood wall panel to Swiss President Guy Parmelin on 5 October 2026. The gifts showcased India’s emerging cheese-making traditions and its rich handicraft heritage. President Parmelin is on a three-day visit to India, his first state visit to the country and his second visit in 2026.

About the Indian Cheeses

Gulmarg is a French-style, heart-shaped soft and creamy Brie made from pasteurised cow’s milk. It has a snowy-white rind with earthy and mushroom-like notes and received a Super Gold award at the 2026 Mundial do Queijo do Brasil.

Konark is a French Tomme-style cheese with a rustic natural rind, supple texture, earthy and savoury flavours and a lemony finish. It won gold at the 2023 World Cheese Awards in Norway and silver in Switzerland in 2025.

Yeoor is a mountain-style cheese inspired by Swiss Gruyere. It is matured for around eight to nine months, developing nutty, sweet and herbaceous flavours. Its rind is decorated with rose petals and fennel, giving it an Indian-Alpine character. Its good melting quality makes it suitable for fondue and grilled preparations.
