PM Modi Praises Naga community’s ‘Morung’ education system

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the Naga community for its efforts in preserving cultural heritage while embracing modern education, during the 132nd edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.

Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister highlighted how communities in Nagaland are successfully integrating traditional knowledge systems with contemporary learning methods. He cited the transformation of the “Morung” system—an indigenous model of community-based education—as a notable example.

Traditionally, Morung functioned as a community learning space, where elders passed on knowledge related to history, culture, and life skills to younger generations through storytelling and shared experiences.

The Prime Minister noted that this system has now evolved to meet modern educational needs by incorporating subjects such as mathematics and science, while continuing to preserve its cultural essence. The approach blends academics with storytelling, folk songs, and traditional games, fostering both intellectual growth and practical life skills.

He emphasized that this fusion of tradition and modernity is contributing to the holistic development of children, and serves as a model for culturally rooted yet progressive education systems across the country.
