Project Suncatcher

Why in News?

Google has announced that Project Suncatcher will conduct its first in-orbit test by launching a prototype satellite to evaluate the performance of its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in space. The mission is part of a long-term research effort to explore the possibility of developing scalable artificial intelligence (AI) computing infrastructure in space.

About Project Suncatcher

Project Suncatcher is a research initiative exploring whether satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) could host and operate large-scale AI computing infrastructure. Satellites in LEO can receive near-constant sunlight, potentially generating up to eight times more solar power than comparable solar installations on Earth, according to Google.

The concept involves connecting multiple satellite constellations to collectively handle larger AI workloads in orbit. However, the initial phase focuses on testing whether computing hardware can withstand the physical and unpredictable conditions of space, including the challenges associated with operating electronic systems in orbit.

About Tensor Processing Unit (TPU)

A Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) is a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) developed by Google to accelerate artificial intelligence and machine-learning workloads. Project Suncatcher will examine how such specialised AI processors perform under actual space conditions and use the results to guide future missions.
