Prosopis juliflora (seemai karuvelam)

The Madras High Court on March 18, 2026 issued 34 directions for the eradication of the invasive species Prosopis juliflora (seemai karuvelam) from Tamil Nadu.

The Court directed that property owners willing to plant native saplings should be provided them free of cost.

Prosopis juliflora, originally from South America, was introduced during early colonial times for use as firewood and industrial fuel.

Although initially useful for fuel, brick kilns, and charcoal production, the species has caused severe ecological damage.

The Court observed that it has destroyed fertile lands, grasslands, and forest soil, turning them into barren areas.

It has also led to the displacement of native flora, adversely affecting biodiversity and ecosystem balance.
