Rani Avantibai Lodhi

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 20 paid tribute to freedom fighter Rani Avantibai Lodhi on her martyrdom day. He described her as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism, and praised her contribution to the freedom struggle.

Rani Avantibai Lodhi played a significant role in the Revolt of 1857, fighting bravely against British forces. Born on August 16, 1831, in Mankehni village (present-day Madhya Pradesh), she was skilled in swordsmanship and horse riding.

She took over administration of the Ramgarh state due to her husband’s ill health. Her resistance grew after the British attempted annexation under the Doctrine of Lapse.

She expelled British officials, led governance, and mobilised farmers against colonial rule. She united neighbouring rulers and led forces in the Battle of Kheri (1857), defeating British troops.

In March 1858, facing a strong British offensive, she chose martyrdom on the battlefield rather than surrender.
