Why in News?
The Ministry of Defence on 23 September signed a ₹810.79 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force. The procurement has been placed under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.
About SAT-SAAW
SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb designed and developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It can be launched from aircraft such as the SEPECAT Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30MKI.
The weapon is designed to neutralise enemy airfields from a long stand-off range, allowing aircraft to engage targets without entering the immediate range of enemy air-defence systems.
The system will have 60% indigenous content, with the programme also focusing on the indigenisation of key subsystems such as the Initial Measurement Unit (IMU), Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier.
