Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam (Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme)

The Tamil Nadu government has approved the “Vetri Thamizhagam” vision document, introducing several flagship welfare initiatives aimed at strengthening social development. One of its key programmes is the “Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam” (Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme).

Under the scheme, every newborn belonging to families permanently residing in Tamil Nadu will receive a one-gram gold ring, provided the child is delivered in a government hospital. Inspired by the Tamil cultural tradition of “Thaaimaaman Seer”, where the maternal uncle welcomes a newborn with gifts, the State government will symbolically assume this role by presenting the gold ring. The initiative aims to honour both the newborn and the mother while encouraging institutional deliveries in public health facilities.

The government has issued a Government Order (GO) for the implementation of the scheme and allocated an annual budget of ₹755.83 crore for its rollout across the state. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has directed officials to invite tenders immediately to ensure the scheme’s timely implementation. According to the government, children born in government hospitals from 22 June 2026 onwards will be eligible, while the formal launch is scheduled for 15 September 2026.
