Thiksey Monastery

Why in News?

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor recently visited the historic Thiksey Monastery in Ladakh during his visit to the Union Territory, highlighting the cultural and Buddhist heritage of the Himalayan region.

Key Points

Thiksey Monastery is located on a hill in Thiksey, around 19 km from Leh, and is one of the largest and most prominent monastic complexes in central Ladakh.

Founded in 1433, the monastery is associated with Tibetan Buddhism and is renowned for its architectural resemblance to Tibet’s Potala Palace.

The monastery houses a rich collection of centuries-old Buddhist images, stupas, scroll paintings and wall paintings, reflecting Ladakh’s religious and artistic heritage.

One of its major attractions is a 15-metre-high statue of Maitreya Buddha, installed during the 1980s.

Thiksey Monastery is also known for its daily morning prayers, which attract visitors and devotees seeking to experience its spiritual traditions.

The monastery provides panoramic views of the surrounding villages and the Indus River, adding to its cultural and tourism significance.
