UPI Completes 10 Years of Digital Payments Revolution

 Why in News?
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched on 25 August 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the regulatory oversight of the RBI, has completed 10 years of transforming India’s digital payments ecosystem.

Key Points:

  • UPI has become a major pillar of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and financial inclusion.
  • Annual transaction volume increased from 1.78 crore in FY 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in FY 2025-26, nearly a 13,000-fold increase.
  • Transaction value rose from ₹0.07 lakh crore to around ₹314 lakh crore during the same period.
  • As of 2025, UPI accounted for nearly 49% of global real-time payment transaction volume, according to the IMF.
  • UPI processes more than 66 crore transactions daily, demonstrating its massive scale and adoption.
  • It has evolved from a domestic payment system into a global benchmark for instant, secure and interoperable digital payments.
  • UPI is currently operational in 11 countries: UAE, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece and Maldives.
  • Its international expansion highlights India’s growing influence in digital financial infrastructure and cross-border payments.
