Visegrád Group (V4)

Why in News?

The Visegrád Group (V4) countries—Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic—have expressed support for India’s permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The statement was made during the first V4+India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York on 21 September 2026. Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár said that India should have a permanent seat on the UNSC.

About Visegrád Group (V4)

The Visegrád Group is a regional grouping of four Central European countries—Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. It seeks to promote cooperation in areas such as politics, economy, defence, energy, culture, technology and connectivity.

The first V4+India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting discussed strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, technology and innovation, resilient supply chains, defence and security, connectivity, education and mobility. The ministers also exchanged views on international security, multilateral cooperation and reforms of global institutions.

India has consistently advocated reform of the UNSC to make it more representative of contemporary geopolitical realities. India works with reform-oriented groupings such as the G4 (India, Brazil, Germany and Japan) and L.69 in support of comprehensive Security Council reform.
