What are Immersive Technologies?

Immersive technologies are a group of technologies that create interactive, engaging and realistic digital experiences by combining physical and digital environments. They allow users to interact with digital objects and simulated situations in ways that feel more natural and experiential.

Unlike conventional digital media, immersive technologies can engage multiple senses and create a stronger sense of presence.

Examples:

  • Students exploring a virtual laboratory instead of only viewing diagrams.
  • Tourists virtually exploring a heritage site before visiting it physically.
  • Trainees practising tasks in simulated real-world environments.

Major Types of Immersive Technologies

The three principal forms are Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). Collectively, they form part of Extended Reality (XR).

1. Virtual Reality (VR)

  • Creates a completely digital environment that surrounds the user.
  • Uses specialised devices, such as VR headsets, to create a sense of presence.
  • Users can explore and interact with simulated surroundings.
  • Example: Virtual laboratory training or a simulated flight.

2. Augmented Reality (AR)

  • Adds digital information or objects to the user’s existing physical surroundings.
  • Keeps the real-world environment visible.
  • Can display directions, labels or digital objects over physical spaces.
  • Example: Navigation directions displayed over a live camera view.

3. Mixed Reality (MR)

  • Combines physical and digital environments interactively.
  • Digital objects can be positioned in and interact with the physical surroundings.
  • Users can view and manipulate digital objects as part of their environment.
  • Example: An engineer examining and manipulating a virtual 3D model of a machine in a real workspace.

Other Technologies in the Immersive Technology Ecosystem

1. 360-degree video

  • Allows users to view a recorded scene in every direction.
  • Users can change their viewing direction to explore different parts of the environment.
  • Used in virtual tourism, education and documentary experiences.

2. Haptic Technology

  • Provides touch-based feedback through vibrations, pressure or other physical sensations.
  • Makes digital interactions feel more realistic.
  • Used in gaming, medical simulation, robotics and training systems.

Extended Reality (XR)

Extended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term for technologies that combine or connect real and digital environments through computer systems and devices, including wearables.

It encompasses:

  • Virtual Reality (VR)
  • Augmented Reality (AR)
  • Mixed Reality (MR)

Applications of Immersive Technologies

  • Education: Virtual laboratories and interactive learning environments.
  • Healthcare: Surgical training, rehabilitation and medical simulations.
  • Defence: Simulated combat training and mission planning.
  • Tourism and culture: Virtual tours of monuments, museums and heritage sites.
  • Industry: Product design, equipment maintenance and worker training.
  • Disaster management: Simulations for emergency response and evacuation training.
