What is Closing Auction Session (CAS)?

Why in News?

According to SEBI’s Annual Report, India’s capital markets remained resilient during FY 2025–26 despite global uncertainties. India retained the top global position in the number of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and ranked third in terms of funds raised through IPOs.

SEBI also introduced a new Closing Auction Session (CAS) from 3 August 2026 to improve price discovery and bring India’s market structure closer to global practices.

Key Points

India’s primary equity market remained strong during FY 2025–26, reflecting continued investor and corporate confidence despite global economic uncertainties.

However, mobilisation through the corporate bond market declined by 8.4% to ₹9.1 lakh crore, marking the first decline in four years.

In contrast, public debt issuances increased by nearly 39%, while fundraising through municipal bonds rose to ₹1,756 crore through 14 issues.

Closing Auction Session (CAS)

SEBI introduced the Closing Auction Session (CAS) from 3 August 2026 as a new mechanism for determining the official closing price of eligible stocks.

The CAS is applicable to cash-segment stocks for which derivative contracts are available, covering more than 200 stocks.

It operates as a separate 20-minute trading session from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM on trading days.

Under the earlier system, the closing price was based on the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) during the last 30 minutes of regular trading.

Under CAS, buy and sell orders are first collected and then matched simultaneously at a single equilibrium price, rather than being executed continuously.

The equilibrium price is the price at which the maximum possible number of shares can be traded, and this price becomes the stock’s official closing price.

SEBI had first proposed the mechanism in 2024, following demands from index-tracking funds for a closing auction mechanism to reduce tracking errors.

Significance of CAS

The Closing Auction Session is expected to improve price discovery, transparency and market efficiency.
