Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Operational Guidelines

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released the Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Operational Guidelines on 29 June 2026 during the 16th Meeting of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW).

  • The launch marks the transition from Anemia Mukt Bharat to Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, reflecting a broader strategy that goes beyond iron supplementation to include testing, therapeutic management, healthy dietary practices (“Eating Right”), and community participation through “Jan Chetna”.

Key Objectives

  • Shift the focus from prophylactic (preventive) care to therapeutic (treatment-based) management of anaemia.
  • Strengthen testing, treatment, tracking, and case-based management of anaemia.
  • Break the intergenerational cycle of anaemia through early intervention.

Key Approaches

  • 7×7×7 Strategy: The revised guidelines expand the earlier 6×6×6 strategy into a 7×7×7 framework, by adding:
    • 7th Beneficiary Group: Low Birth Weight (LBW) babies (0–6 months).
    • 7th Intervention: “Eating Right” campaign promoting Iron-rich diets, diversified and balanced nutrition and healthy eating habits to prevent anaemia.
    • 7th Institutional Mechanism: A strengthened Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework with digital tracking of beneficiaries.
  • Transition from T3 to T4 Approach
    • The programme upgrades its strategy from T3: Test → Treat → Talk to T4: Test → Treat → Talk → Track.
  • The new approach emphasizes:
    • Universal haemoglobin testing.
    • Treatment according to anaemia management protocols.
    • Continuous tracking, referral, follow-up, and counselling on healthy nutrition.

Clinical Interventions

  • For severe anaemia and non-responders among pregnant and lactating women, the guidelines include intravenous iron therapy, such as ferric Carboxymaltose (FCM) and iron sucrose

Digital Monitoring

Health records will be integrated through:

  • JANANI Portal – haemoglobin records of pregnant women.
  • Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) – child health records.
  • U-WIN – child immunisation and health records.

These will converge into a unified Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Portal for comprehensive monitoring, analysis, and planning.

Community Participation

  • The programme also launches “Jan Bhagidari”, a nationwide community mobilisation initiative to increase public awareness about anaemia and encourage active participation of individuals, families, and communities.
