Aravalli helicopter engine

Why in News?
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have joined hands to jointly design, develop and manufacture the ‘Aravalli’ helicopter engine for India’s planned 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).

Key Points:

• The programme is being undertaken through their 50:50 joint venture, SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd.
• The Aravalli will be a new-generation engine in the 3,500–4,000 shaft horsepower (shp) class.
• It will also include supply and lifecycle support for the engine.
• The engine will be manufactured at Tumakuru, Karnataka.
• The project marks a shift from licensed production to joint development of a high-power helicopter engine in India.
• It is significant for building India’s indigenous capability in critical aero-engine and propulsion technologies.
• HAL will gain access to critical technologies including:
  • High-Pressure Compressor
  • Power turbine
  • Fuel and oil systems
  • Accessory gearbox
  • Engine external systems
• The programme is expected to strengthen India’s capabilities for developing future generations of indigenous aero-engines.
