The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change convened a high-level meeting on the Bhagirathi Eco-Sensitive Zone (BESZ) in Dehradun on 21 March. The meeting was chaired by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav.

About Bhagirathi Eco-Sensitive Zone

The Bhagirathi Eco-Sensitive Zone is a crucial ecological region as it marks the origin stretch of the Ganges River. The BESZ was notified on 18 December 2012, covering the stretch from Gaumukh to Uttarkashi, spanning an area of 4,179.59 sq. km.

The notification mandates the Government of Uttarakhand to prepare a Zonal Master Plan (ZMP) for sustainable management of the region.

The implementation of the Zonal Master Plan is to be carried out under the supervision of a designated Monitoring Committee to ensure ecological protection and balanced development.
