Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON)

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences have signed a long-term Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Climate Observation Station in the Himalayan region.

  • The initiative aims to strengthen climate change research and long-term atmospheric monitoring under the Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON).
  • The new observation station will be set up at Devasthal Campus, operated by ARIES.
  • Devasthal, owing to its high-altitude and relatively pristine atmospheric conditions, is ideal for advanced climate and atmospheric observations.

About Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON)

  • BCON is a national initiative of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, implemented by IITM Pune.
  • It seeks to establish a long-term, high-precision climate monitoring network across India.
  • The network will generate high-quality climate datasets for:
    • Detecting long-term climate trends.
    • Strengthening climate and atmospheric research.
    • Supporting evidence-based climate policymaking.
    • Improving climate risk assessment and adaptation strategies.

Significance

  • The data generated through BCON will help validate and improve Earth System Models (ESMs), including IITM’s Earth System Model.
  • It will enhance the accuracy of climate simulations and future climate projections for India.
  • The Himalayan observation station will improve understanding of mountain climate processes, cryosphere changes, and regional climate variability, supporting better forecasting and disaster preparedness.
