UNICEF Children’s Climate Risk Report 2026 – Key Highlights

The Children’s Climate Risk Report 2026 was released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)  on 16 June 2026.

  • The report examines how multiple and overlapping climate hazards, children’s physical vulnerabilities, and inadequate social services threaten children’s rights, health, education, and survival.
  • It states that almost all children globally are exposed to at least one climate hazard, including: coastal floods, riverine floods, drought, heatwaves and extreme heat, wildfires, sand and dust storms; tropical storms.
  • Around 1.1 billion children (nearly half of the world’s children) are exposed to at least three overlapping climate hazards.
  • More than 4 million children face six overlapping climate-related threats.
  • The report also assesses children’s exposure to climate-sensitive risks such as air pollution and vector-borne diseases like Malaria.
  • UNICEF calls for urgent, coordinated, and child-responsive climate policies and investments to uphold every child’s right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.

India-Specific Findings

  • 411.62 million children in India are exposed to at least two climate- or disaster-related hazards.
  • More than 234 million children (about 55% of India’s child population) are exposed to at least three overlapping climate hazards, increasing risks to their health, education, nutrition, and safety.
  • The most common hazard combination is drought and extreme heat, affecting over 158.8 million children.
  • Drought is identified as the most widespread climate hazard affecting children in India.
  • Over 96% of Indian children (about 410.2 million) live in areas exposed to agricultural or meteorological drought, threatening food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and overall child well-being.
